WACMN’s steering strategic group, the Regional Reference Group (RRG) is leading the Network throughout 2026–2027, building on extensive statewide engagement undertaken between 2023 and 2025. This includes regional consultations across eight bioregions, stewardship forums since 2023 and, which together inform WACMN’s 2025–2030 Action Plan. This step signals a clear shift from consultation toward coordinated implementation.
At the core of WACMN’s purpose is enabling more integrated and connected coastal and marine stewardship across the State. This includes:
- Strengthening collaboration across regions
- Supporting cross-sector partnerships
- Building connections within the Network
- Facilitating knowledge sharing and exchange
- Creating opportunities for ongoing engagement through events and forums
The Regional Reference Group collaborate together to discuss regional stewardship contexts and to inform the transition toward a more statewide coastal led model. The group meets regularly to identify emerging priorities, share regional insights, and contribute to the development of coordinated approaches to stewardship.

The RRG includes representatives from key regions:
- Gascoyne: Grace Keast, Sea Shepherd (Exmouth)
- Pilbara: Kelly Howlett, Care for Hedland
- Midwest: Josh Burney, NACC (Geraldton)
- South West: Mandy Polley, Nature Conservation Margaret River Region
- South Coast: Peter Barnes, Torbay Catchment Group

The RRG is playing an active leadership and advisory role within WACMN, acting as a conduit between regional priorities and statewide coordination. Representation is being expanded to include additional sub-regional voices, ensuring the Network remains grounded in place-based knowledge while strengthening its capacity for collective action across Western Australia.
