Perth NRM celebrates Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday at the WA Museum
On Saturday 9 May, a community of environmental educators came together in celebration of Sir David Attenborough 100th birthday with a dynamic activation at WA Museum Boola Bardip’s Community Science Lab.
Perth NRM was one of six exhibitors at the WA Museum, alongside Invertebrates Australia, WA Landcare Network, Angela Rossen, Nature Link Perth and Saving Our Snake-Necked Turtle – all paying tribute to Sir David Attenborough, who has inspired generations to connect with nature.
Kate Sputore, Executive Manager Environment said while all of Perth NRM’s work reflects Sir David Attenborough’s lifelong commitment to restoring biodiversity and protecting the natural world, the team chose to highlight its Coastal and Marine Program because it reflects the urgency of ocean protection explored in his latest documentary, Ocean.
“Western Australia’s coastline stretches nearly 13,000 kilometres – the longest of any Australian state and one of the longest in the world,” she said.
“It is home to the iconic Ningaloo Reef, the ancient stromatolites of Shark Bay, and a diverse range of coastal environments. While much of WA’s regional coastline remains pristine, population pressures along the Perth metropolitan coast mean community involvement is critical to protecting these natural assets.
“Sir Dave’s message is simple: ‘If we save the sea, we save our world.’ Through our Coastal + Marine program, West Australians of all ages can get involved in dune planting days, Adopt-a-Beach school sessions and beach clean-ups, supporting the global ‘30 by 30’ goal to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
“Sir Dave’s Day is more than a celebration – it’s an invitation for every West Australian to be part of the solution.”
In recognition of Sir Dave Day , applications are now open for the Perth NRM 2026 Small Grants for volunteer groups, to support the invaluable work of landcare groups across our region.
Applications close Monday 1st June.
