Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, Exmouth

SPOTLIGHT ON GASCOYNE

Vlamingh Head Lighthouse is situated 17 km (11 miles) to the north of the settlement of Exmouth, Western Australia.

The Vlamingh Head lighthouse on the North West Cape is the perfect spot to take in a Ningaloo sunrise or sunset. Overlooking Lighthouse Bay, it is one of the few locations in Australia where both the sunrise and the sunset can be observed.

During Autumn, humpback whales pass through the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park on the way to the Kimberley. On their way back they stop off in the Exmouth gulf where their new-born calves frolic safely in the calmer waters found there. Then in spring they head south again, and often can be seen blowing and breaching spectacularly from this high vantage point.

During our trip to the lighthouse while in Exmouth we witnessed what could be described as a ‘whale disco’ looking out to sea.  So many giant forms leaping out of the ocean to breach, as if in a joyous, unified, dance.  What a special experience in such an amazing part of WA.
