The Society for Marine Mammalogy are hosting the 25th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Perth on 11-15 November 2024. The Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) is an international non-profit organisation that connects scientists around the world with a shared passion for studying the magnificent
marine mammals of our global oceans.
The Society hosts biennial scientific conferences on topics concerning conservation and management of marine mammals. For the first time in SMM history, this conference will be held in Australia. We will have the honour to introduce the rest of the world to the beautifully diverse natural coast, marine life and rugged wilderness of Western Australia.
The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Culture and Conservation: Fishing for Change’, which shines a light on one of the most significant threats to marine mammals worldwide – interactions with fishing gear. The biennial conference will cover contemporary marine mammal research, conservation and management issues with focus on cultural aspects and human dimensions.
Specifically, we aim to identify actions to reduce fishing-related marine mammal mortality, up-skill management agencies and individuals responsible for marine mammal incident response, support capacity building of Indigenous and developing country participants, and facilitate collaboration among scientists, managers, policymakers and Traditional Owners.
